Neoclassical building with tall columns under a blue sky. A group of people walks on a path in a green park. Trees frame the scene.

A Hidden Gem Above the Danube

My first trip to Germany was full of surprises and it did not disappoint. One moment you are walking through a modern downtown back drop and then you are standing in front of a marble temple that resembles a Greek masterpiece.

That's how I experienced Walhalla. It sits above the Danube River. Beautiful, peaceful, and majestic. It seems surreal.

What started as a must-see suggestion by an acquaintance turned into a lesson in history mixed with stunning views.

A Temple of German History

Ornate hall with statues and busts, featuring a blue and gold ceiling. People admire the art. Warm lighting creates a serene atmosphere.

This temple was constructed in the 1800s. It is a hall of fame with an eclectic mix off members. Scientists, writers, rulers, musicians, and many more. Stepping inside the temple is like being transported in time.

Inside is a mix of marble columns, polished floors, and beautiful ceilings. Its stunning yet peaceful. A place filled with statues and accolades, but it doesn't make you feel heavy --- it makes you feel a sense of astonishment.

It's one thing to hear about some of the people that contributed to history but being there makes it real. It makes you reflect on your own moments in your life and how it shapes who you are.

A View Etched in Memory

People on stone steps overlook a lush landscape with a river under a blue sky with fluffy clouds.

If the inside is amazing, then the outside is phenomenal!

Stepping onto the terrace of the temple, the world opens up at your feet!

At your feet: The beautiful, serpentine, Danube River

Just beyond your reach: fields, forests, and picturesque villages across the landscape.

Clean air and quiet spaces. The view alone makes you stop and simply take a breath.

Standing on the river watching boats and the people brought a sense of peace. Being a nurse, those moments of peace and clarity are cherished.

Down the Steps We Go

Stone steps lead to a neoclassical building with a triangular pediment under a bright blue sky with clouds, creating a serene mood.

Be prepared to walk if you visit this magnificent place. The steps lead from the temple down towards the river. During your descent you will be greeted by a shifting beautiful backdrop. I can remember the steep and wide steps. I can remember to warm air, the wildlife, and the soft sound of the flowing river. Something you will never forget.

A Relaxed and Uncomplicated Adventure

Sometimes the castles and museums can be crowded with different tours and various schedules. Walhalla is made for retrospect and taking in the surrounding beauty.

When I attended, I didn't feel rushed or pressured.

It felt like it was just the temple, the scenery, the Danube, and us.

A great place to breathe and feel centered.

What Walhalla Meant to Me

Scenic view of a river under a sky with fluffy clouds. Green fields and trees in the background. A person stands on the stone steps.

For 5 euros you gained access to a time machine. Remember travel is not just about the big trips or destinations. An unexpected place such as Walhalla is just as grand. Simplicity is beauty. Having your peace should be intentional. And why not find it on a hill in Germany with an amazing view.
